How to negotiate your salary when moving roles!

Salary negotiation when moving jobs isn't a simple process, but if you follow some key principles you can set yourself up for success.

Know your numbers, and take the time to really understand your current package. Don't assume that benefits are standard, and account for any you might be losing or gaining in your expected salary. It's much harder to ask at the end if you forget something.

Remember negotiation is a two-way street, if you don't get the number you want the first time around ask why. It may be they see skills gaps or you're moving into a role you haven't performed before. In some cases, employers are willing to build in a pay rise to your initial offer linked to key milestones.

Think holistically, the number your offered isn't the total value of a role. When assessing an offer think about progression, exposure and job satisfaction. Try and think long term, working with a particular organisation or learning something new can have huge value.

If your expectations change mid-process be prepared to justify why. It's much easier to ask for more if it's backed up by sound reasoning and is less likely to provoke a negative response.

I've written this from a job seeker's perspective but almost all of this is valid on the employer's side too.
