How useful is a Job Spec in the ServiceNow World ?

I’ve seen an increasing number of LinkedIN posts that claim that unless a job spec is provided ahead of time you shouldn’t speak to a recruiter or progress with a role, and I couldn’t disagree more

Most of the most successful placements I have made over the last 9 years in the ServiceNow space have happened without a job spec, and I think for experienced multi-skilled employees this creates more successful outcomes.

What people are looking for when moving is typically an increase in the combination of these three things

- Progression

- Money

- Experience

And the job spec typically addresses none of the above.

If you work with an agent who takes the time to understand your motivations and their client’s culture and roadmap you can work the process another way. (this does require an element of trust)

A more agile interview process provides far more than rigidly interviewing against an exact role. An informal discussion followed by a deep dive into the skills and someone’s motivation would ideally be done before you focus on role specifics.

This provides significant advantages to candidate and client alike; the candidate can achieve a role more closely tailored to their ideal which in turn makes them more likely to accept.

Clearly, the caveat to this is the client needs to have the flexibility to hire in this way, but for most of my clients who often have multiple open headcounts, it can be an effective way to secure quality candidates in jobs they will thrive in
